Title: Uroboros
Genre: Young Adult, Supernatural.
Rating: Teen friendly.
Synopsis: Eden-Paradis Pomme has a lot on her plate: her parents divorced, her best friend died, and a crippling car accident left Eden hospitalized and gifted with the ability to feel other people's emotions--all before finishing high school. Starting over in a new town, Eden's only hope is to survive senior year and clear out after graduation, but after meeting Gaspard Tautou, surviving might be more difficult than Eden thought. Recruited into the hidden world of Finsternis, a group of humans and vampires who hunt down anyone who threatens to reveal their supernatural secrets, Eden has to uncover her true memories about the accident that killed her best friend or die trying. And when there's a rogue vampire gang breathing down your neck, making your small town's mortality rate inch perilously high, death might be closer than you'd think.

Author's Note: This has gone through several edits but is still considered rough. Any and all feedback is very much welcome. Your comments will help make this story even more deserving of my pride and attention.

[info]octocoffee asked if I was going to make a playlist for this fic, and I was originally hesitant... and then randomly the other day, while I was writing the first chapter, all these ideas came into my head. These ideas amassed into like, 30 some odd songs, which is kinda silly so I split the playlists up into two parts (Kyo to Ayu Side A / Ayu to Kyo Side B). And I figured since people seemed to like my playlists, I should share it here.

"Go back to where you came from," "You're not part of this country," "America doesn't want you," all of these phrases may not be familiar to you but their sentiments are well known. At one point in time you either thought, however briefly, these words, you know someone who said them, or you were on the receiving end of them. What I find so spot on about this cartoon, drawn by Honolulu Star artist Corky Francisco, is how it manages to shoot all these statements and sentiments right in the foot with the seemingly simple image of a young, visibly Muslim, girl saying no more than four words: "But we're from Iowa...?"

What this cartoon does is show how idiotic and pointless it is to tell these "Muslins and Ayrabs" to go back to where they came from... because they're American citizens just like the same venom-spewing mouth-breathers who condemn them. They belong here with just as much right and privilege as Johnny and Jane Be Whites who live next door - they belong just like any person of any race belongs.

The assignment called for a critique on cartoon that targets a specific racial group after 9/11, and what this cartoon does is show a targeting of a racial group by another -- thus, targeting the racist and close-minded sentiments of one race and how it has no basis or logical standing. I find that refreshing considering the atmosphere of America at the aftermath of 9/11 was extremely xenophobic, bitter, hostile and frighteningly "patriotic." Patriotic is in quotations to suggest that what was being called patriotism was really nothing more than people getting away with saying and doing racist and hateful things while throwing up the justification of being a "true American" and those who would oppose them were "unAmerican" and therefore traitors.

Going back to the cartoon -- I applaud the artist's choice to contrast the young girl with an older white man who, in my experience, have been the most guilty of spewing statements like this. I applaud it because by outright showing the racist man (who is visibly white) pitted against a girl (who is visibly Muslim), the viewers of the cartoon are allowed to look at a reflection of themselves (if they are white, racist or being scrutinized the way the young girl is in the cartoon). I also applaud the artist's choice for the girl to say she's from Iowa, a stereotypically mostly white state in America. Iowa is also located in the Midwest, which is sort of the "heart" of America as a country. By saying that this girl and by extension her family come from Iowa, the artist is suggesting that they're citizens of the heartland -- that they're at the core of our country. If America is a nation of immigrants, wouldn't this be considered true? Immigrants are what made and still make America. They're at its core - its heart (a word which, in French, is pronounced very similar to our word "core"). By having the old white man tell the girl to go back to where she came from, it's showing how impossible such an order is, because these "Muslins and Ayrabs" are just as much a part of the heart of America as the bitter old coot yelling at her.

I was relieved to have found this cartoon, which was considered one of the best political cartoons of 2001. Going into this project I expected to find nothing but racist, anti-Arabic, anti-Islam vitriol, and thus was pleasantly surprised to have found this one. It's a daring cartoon to draw in 2001, because of America's xenophobia and the demonization of Arabic people and the religion of Islam.

title: I Live to See You Smile
chapter: Six
fandom: Batman / The Dark Knight
warnings: There will be spoilers throughout the rest of the chapters. Violence and 'suggestive' content. Some language.
rating: T
pairing: Joker / Harley Quinn.
summary: "I'm not going to tell anyone," Harleen said at last, lifting her head from the floor to peer at him dead on.

The Joker was looking at the mirror across from them, the small glass arch that was cracked in the upper left corner. “I know you won't,” he said. It was remarkable how this simple response could seem like a threat.

A/N: This is set in the Nolan universe and obviously it features Heath Ledger's version of the Joker. I've characterized Harleen Quinzel as appropriately as I personally saw to fit into Nolan's perspective of Gotham and its characters - essentially I'm attempting to take a realistic approach here, so there are obvious changes to not only her back story but personality.
